JSW Steel Ltd Successfully Rolls HSM2 First Coil with TMEIC, TMEIC GE Electrical and Automation Systems

Roanoke, Va. (May 3, 2010) –JSW Steel Limited, headquartered in Mumbai, India, successfully rolled the first coil at its Hot Strip Mill 2, located at Toranagallu, Bellary District, Karnataka India, on March 28. TMEIC and TMEIC GE provided complete electrical and automation system for the project.

The first coil rolled off the production line ahead of schedule, the initial step towards an annual production capacity of 5 million tons of steel. According to goals set by JSW Steel Vice Chairman Mr. Sajjan Jindal, the company expects to increase annual production up to 16 million tons of steel in coming years.

Industrial drives and motor equipment were provided by TMEIC facilities in Japan, while the automation system and complete electrical system engineering were supplied by TMEIC GE offices in Roanoke, Va.

The total project scope of supply included:

• Nine (9) TMDrive 70 medium voltage main mill drives for TMEIC supplied motors ranging from 2,500 to 10,000 kW.

• Four (4) TMDrive 30 medium voltage auxiliary drives for TMEIC supplied motors ranging from 1,300 to 1,500 kW.

• More than two hundred (200) TMDrive 10 low voltage AC auxiliary drives.

• Complete automation system featuring twenty-one (21) powerful Toshiba V-Series controllers.

• Operator Control system featuring Intellution Touch Panels located in three (3) pulpits and eleven (11) remote floor stations.

• Process Control System featuring the industry-leading TMEIC GE process modeling software operating on eleven (11) networked computers. The new system will precisely control strip thickness, strip width, coil telescopicity, coiling temperature and mill exit temperature

• Total system design including project management, power system studies, medium and low voltage power distribution system design, electrical construction documentation, automation system design and system verification.

• Comprehensive site services including installation assistance, drives commissioning, automation system verification and system acceptance testing.

TMEIC and TMEIC GE were chosen by JSW due to their extensive expertise in providing high performance hot strip mill automation systems around the world and the high efficiency and lower operating cost the TMEIC TMDrive 70 main mill drives.
